Cellist, Jeanette Jarvis will perform at the Gloversville Public Library on Monday October 24th at 6:00 pm.

Jeanette Jarvis was born and educated in Sweden earning the title of Cello Pedagog from the Obrero Musikpedagogiska Institute. She performed with the Gavle Symphone Orkester before deciding to become a full time Cellopedagog. She moved to Gloversville in 1984 and has taught cello, piano and recorder privately. She is currently substitute teaching and is the Music Director at the Northville Presbyterian Church.

Celebrate What You Love In Fulton County

Friends' 5th annual "Celebration" fundraiser has begun. Raffle baskets are on display, including the return of the Mega Basket valued at over $900. Tickets for the Mega Basket: Eat, Play, Shop are $5 each or 5 for $20. Tickets for the rest of the baskets are $1 each or 6 for $5. They can be purchased at the Library.

If you are unable to visit, checks can be mailed to the Library along with your name, phone number and the basket numbers you would like to take chances on. Photos and contents can be viewed on the Library's Flickr page.

The Auction Art will be on display next to the Mohawk Harvest Cooperative Market, N. Main St., Gloversville, but can also be viewed on Flickr. Silent bids will be accepted using this form.

Peter Fletcher Returns

Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher is returning to the Gloversville Public Library on Monday, July 11th at 6pm.

Peter Fletcher began guitar study at the age of seven under classical guitar instructor, John Sutherland. In 1980 Peter was the youngest student to perform in a Master Class given by classical guitarist José Tomás, teaching assistant to Andrés Segovia of Spain.

At the age of fifteen he made his formal debut under the auspices of The Brasstown Concert Association in North Carolina. A critic for The Cherokee Scout is quoted as writing, “He has technical facility but what one remembers about his playing is the nuances, the poetical phrasing, dynamic and tonal changes, his harmonics, his cadences.”

Fletcher continued his studies under the direction of a number of masters. As a performer in the Christopher Parkening Master Class he was chosen to play in the student recital two consecutive years and, in 1988, the class was broadcast on National Public Radio (NPR).

In 1990, the Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA) awarded Fletcher a prize at its National Level Competition. In 1995, he received the Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music under Nicholas Goluses, and was twice the recipient of an Eastman Graduate Award.

In demand as a performer in cultural venues throughout the country, Mr. Fletcher has been invited to give recitals at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY; Cincinnati‟s Memorial Hall; St. Philip Cathedral in Atlanta; Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina; the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, DE, and many others.

While his official New York Debut is credited to his performance in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in February 2007, with 3 more appearances from 2008-2010, he first played for us in our Carnegie Room in 2004.

Please join us in welcoming him back on Monday, July 11th at 6pmfor a 70 minute concert.

To make the performance accessible to all, it will be held on the first floor in the Reference Room. Unfortunately, there is no air conditioning, so dress accordingly. Light refreshments provided by the Friends of the Gloversville Public Library will be available during intermission.

As part of the Interfaith Story Circle of the Tri-City Area, Children at the Well have been bringing young people of different faiths (and their families) together through the art of storytelling for six years in the Capital Region of New York State.

What happened at your library this week? Well, let’s see now…Monday, April 4th, we opened at 3:00 as we are doing now every week. We had 17 patrons on computers checking their email, 201 patrons brought in books and checked out more and there were several patrons reading the newspapers. Many children and a few parents were in the children’s room working on reports for school, and at 6:00 we had a free concert given by Don Golden of IM3 with 75 people attending…60 in the reference room, and another 15 out in the hall listening! A typical day at your library! And this was all on a day when we were only open for 5 hours!

Thanks to the support of Gloversville Enlarged School District voters last year the Gloversville Public Library has been able to expand hours and services. With the additional funding the Library reopened for Monday hours, after 20+ years, increasing the number of hours that it is open each week by 5 hours to 45 hours. We have seen a consistent increase each month in the number of patrons visiting our library, the number of items being checked out (in library speak…circulation) and in the number of patrons using our public access computers. We have increased the number of computers available for public use. These are separate from the computers that are used to search for books. We have hired a part-time Programming Coordinator to help us develop more programs, find grants to support more programs, and to send out the information on the programs that we are offering to the local media. If you have attended our Facebook class (in February), our poem telling workshop, or our concert featuring IM3, you have been a direct beneficiary of the work that our Program Coordinator is doing. She has been working hard to develop more programs and would welcome ideas from anyone. As of now, we have 2 additional programs each month scheduled through this summer.

So who uses our library? We have senior citizens looking for books to enjoy while they can’t go outside during our cold winters, or looking for large print books to make their reading pleasure easier. We have the morning newspaper readers who come in to read one of the 8 daily papers that we subscribe to. We have our computer users who come in to check email, surf the web, or work on on-line applications for jobs. We have our parents of small children who come in with their tots for StoryTime, or to replenish their reading books with new ones. We have students attending the GED classes that use our upstairs Friend’s Room three times a week to complete their high school education that was interrupted for a variety of reasons. We have high school students who meet their tutors after school regularly to work on improving their grades. And we have the regulars who just come in to pick up the books that they have ordered on-line so that they don’t have to spend a lot of time searching for the particular book that they want to read.

This is your library. We are working hard to continue to provide quality services to you, our patrons. As we look at the stats each month, it is clear to us that the library continues to be a valuable service. We are experiencing over 9,000 visitors a month, circulating 8,800 books a month, both figures continue to increase. The computers were used by 1,000 people during the month of January and that doesn’t include those that bring their own computers to use the wireless network. In the annual state report for 2010, we had 89,645 items circulated, including books, dvd’s, large print books, tapes, and magazines. We had 122,793 visits and we have 8,644 patrons who are registered library card holders. Our meeting room is busy with a variety of users including small groups needing a public meeting space. Our historical room continues to draw people who are investigating their family heritage, old headlines, and other information about Gloversville and the surrounding area. This library is busy and alive, thanks to all of you. Help us to continue to improve our services to you, our patrons. Come in and make the Gloversville Public Library YOUR library!

CONTEST ENTRY INFORMATION

The Gloversville Public Library and the Gloversville Enlarged School District have joined forces to present a contest opportunity to every student in the school district.

This contest is centered around a mural that was painted on the side wall of the Mohawk Harvest Cooperative Market on Main Street this past summer. Its title is "Books are Magic". If you can’t see it in person, you can see pictures of it on Facebook by searching “literacy mural”.

CONTEST RULES

1. Students must read one of the books depicted in the mural, or one of the books on the supplemental book list. View List Of Books here (PDF file).

2. After reading the book, students will creatively respond to this question. Why is this book magic to me?

3. The creative response may be presented in a number of ways. It could be a written response in the form of a story, a play, a narrative, or poetry. It might be an oral presentation in the form of a song, a speech, a dramatic reading, or a costumed presentation. It could be created in any artistic media such as a graphic novel, a drawing, a painting, a poster, a diorama, a video, or computer generated art. In other words, your response to the question can be in any form your imagination takes you. Remember, “When it comes to ideas, there are no rules.”

4. You will be judged on how well you respond to the question, how creative your response is, and the quality of your work.

5. You may work with a partner or partners. All participants’ names must be on the official entry sheet which will be attached to your finished product.

6. Very important…You will be on your honor to do this project without any outside assistance. That means no parents, grandparents, older siblings, nor anybody else (other than student partners) is allowed to help you answer the question or help create the final project.

7. If your finished project is to be spoken (speech, song, dramatic reading, etc. you must make a digital recording of it to submit. You should also be prepared to perform it live on presentation night. (May 9, 2011)

8. There will be three age/grade categories for the awarding of prizes. They are grades K-5, middle school, and high school. Within each category there will be a first place winner who will win $75, a second place winner who will win $50, and a third place winner who will win $25.

9. There will be a panel of experienced judges, and the decision of the judges will be final.

A Musical Evening with Intermountain Trio

The trio, Tim Keegan, Don Golden and Michael McAllister, can be classified as a vocal group, focusing on 3 part harmony.

They will present an evening of folk music featuring songs from artists such as James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, Tom Paxton, Schooner Fare, Dan Fogelberg, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Crosby, Stills and Nash and the Beatles. They will also include some Irish tunes as well to commemorate the upcoming St Patrick's Day.

Poemtelling with Marni Gillard

Join us on Monday, March 7, from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm, as the Gloversville Library hosts a workshop on Poemtelling.

This aspect of storytelling helps people of all ages find the poems in their lives and hearts. Learn to use storytelling techniques to add life and emotion to poems, be they yours or someone else’s.

Poemtelling will be presented by Marni Gillard, a well respected storyteller from the Capital District. She will both tell and read poems aloud, encouraging word-play that eventually becomes whole poems. She will help us explore the poem-talk that allows us to see the magic inside those gifts of words we call POEMS.

Marni has presented for all ages, both locally and nationally, in over two hundred events at schools and universities, libraries, museums, prison facilities, houses of worship, family gatherings, festivals, and even at airport openings. She has a long list of credentials that include performing for Proctor’s Theater Word Play, and coaching for Children at the Well an Interfaith Teen Storytelling group. This event is FREE.

This event was funded in part by Poets & Writers, Inc. with public funds from New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

The Gloversville Public Library will be closed on Monday, February 21, for Presidents' Day. The library will re-open on Tuesday, February 22, as normally scheduled.

From Tuesday, February 22, through Saturday, February 26, join us for a week long celebration of Dr Seuss' birthday. Each day, starting at 11 am, there will be stories read, movies to watch and crafts to enjoy.

The Friends of the Gloversville Public Library will host its weekly story time Thursday, February 24, at 10:30 am in the Carnegie Room. Lexington Home & Careers College will be the featured reader. Story time is for children ages 2 and older, accompanied by an adult.

These hands-on classes take you through setting up an account and posting your first message. Besides discussing some features and tools available in Facebook we'll also discuss some strategies for making sure that you protect your online identity. Some basic computer skills are needed.

This workshop will be presented by Michael V. Daly,the Instruction/Public Services Librarian at Fulton-Montgomery Community College where he works with students, helping them understand and access information in their daily lives.

Bring a laptop if you have one. WI-FI is available. This event is FREE.

In May 2010 the NYS Board of Regents approved the Gloversville Public Library's charter amendment to change the number of elected library trustees from seven (7) to a range of seven (7) to fifteen (15).

At their October meeting the Board of Trustees approved a change to the Library's By-laws to expand the number of elected trustee seats from seven (7) to nine (9) thus creating two openings. Any resident of the of the Gloversville Enlarged School District over the age of 18 is eligible.

Anyone interested in filling this vacancy should submit a letter of interest to Christine Pesses, President of the Board of Trustees, at the Gloversville Public Library, 58 E. Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY 12078. Letters should include information about your interest in service on the Library’s board, your vision of, and for, the Library, previous volunteer experience, and membership on any boards or committees. The letters must be postmarked by the extended deadline of January 8, 2011. The Board of Trustees will fill the vacancy after reviewing the letters received. Interviews may be conducted. The appointment of the new trustees will be made at the February 2011 Board of Trustees meeting.

The newly appointed trustees will serve until the next library election in May of 2011 at which time the positions will be up for election. Information about the positions and the Library can be picked up at the front desk of the Library or found on the Library’s website, www.gloversvillelibrary.org. Gold Fundraiser

The Friends of the Gloversville Library are hard at work. We are having a Gold Fundraiser on Sat Oct the 13th at J Fine from 1-3pm. You can make money and also give to the Friends. Stop in with your gold that you no longer need....you will get cash on the spot and also help us a bit. You will get the going rate, and J Fine has offered to donate a portion to us. Interlibrary Loan Delivery Cuts

Due to NYS funding cuts to the Mohawk Valley Library System, the delivery system will be operating only 4 days a week from now until March. This means that it will take longer for any items you request from another library to arrive here for you.

Celebration Wrap Up

The Friends of the Gloversville Public Library raised more than $23,000 at its fourth annual brunch and silent art auction. The event was held on Sunday, September 26 at Pine Brook Golf Club, with 120 people attending.

The highlights of the event were a silent auction of art and special offerings, and a basket raffle drawing. Everyone in attendance received a calendar which included photographs of a stuffed bear having “Fun in Fulton County.” The brunch was catered by the Railyard, and the desserts were provided by the Union Hall Inn.

More than 20 area artists, jewelry makers, woodworkers, restaurants, and businesses donated items for the silent auction. Many of the donations incorporated the event’s theme in their work.

Barbara Madonna, Director of the Library, served as master of ceremonies. Commenting on the large turnout, Madonna said, “I am thrilled that the Library has such supportive and generous benefactors in our area who understand the necessity of providing public library services to our community. Our historic Carnegie library serves both as a location to provide those services and as an architectural gem which needs to be preserved. Thankfully the Friends and their supporters are committed to the Library’s mission and its unique building.”

Funds from last year's Celebration were used for new historic and energy efficient lighting in the lobby. Installation was completed last week. The 2010 proceeds will be used toward an historic restoration of the Library's exterior. Thank you to everyone, from sponsors to basket ticket buyers, who supported this event and by extension the Library.

Make a Change Closer to Home - Grant Opportunity

Pepsi Beverages Company and Price Chopper Supermarkets are teaming up to help consumers “Make a Change Closer to Home."

The companies are donating a total of $30,000 to be awarded to local organizations who want to make a difference in their communities.

Beginning Aug. 26, residents of participating states in which Price Chopper has stores may submit an idea as to how they would spend $2,000 to improve their neighborhoods.

Applicants, who meet the eligibility requirements, can submit their ideas at http://www.pricechopper.refresheverything.com/ through September 28. The first 300 ideas received will be reviewed by Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation. The top 15 ideas will be awarded a $2,000 grant to bring their ideas to life.

Grant winners will be announced October 26 on the http://www.pricechopper.refresheverything.com/ website. Applicants and customers are encouraged to spread the word and submit an idea to make a difference in their communities.

Artists in Schools Grant Program 2010 - 2011

Funding for an artist residency in your school is available.

Application deadline: November 5, 2010

Administered by the NYS Alliance for Arts Education for Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Schoharie, Montogomery and Fulton County Schools.

This program supports partnerships between schools and teaching artists or cultural organizations that integrate the arts with non-arts subjects. Grants from $500 - $2500 are available to match funds from your school district PTA/PTO and other sources. This program is made possible with public funds from the local capacity building initiative, a regrant program of the arts in Education Program of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), a State Agency.

SPLASH! into New York State Water Science

Join us on Wednesday August 11, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. as we welcome local author and teaching artist Carol Parenzan Smalley in the program "SPLASH! into New York State Water Science."

In this 90 minute program, children will…

• Experience water with their senses

• Perform auditory rain-making activity while learning the importance of water to all living things

• Croak with the frogs (including wood frog, the NYS amphibian) while creating their own musical notation system to record the sounds of nature

• Explore the physics of water by devising a musical xylophone (to accompany the frogs)

• Capture a moment of water time using haiku (based on the River of Words poetry project)

• Experiment with Gyotaku, the Japanese art of fish printing (with replica of a trout, the NYS fish)

Gloversville Library slates programs

On Wednesday, August 4th at 10:30 am, Gloversville Library will host The Tang Museum in the Children's Room. Children, first grade and up, will be shown how to make Flip-Flop Flippers. Each child will decorate their own flip-flop, and then we'll combine the flippers into one big work of art.

On Thursday, August 5th, at 10:30 a.m., summer story time will be held in the Carnegie Room at the Gloversville Public Library.

The featured story teller will be Mary Jo Lomanto. She has taught Headstart for many years and will teach kindergarten in the fall. Ms. Lomanto will read "Commotion in the Ocean" by G. Andreae, "Five Little Sharks Swimming in the Sea" by S. Metzger, "Look Out for the Big Bad Fish!" by S. Cain. Songs will include "Baby Beluga" and "This is the Sea that Feeds Us." Ms. Lomanto will bring her puppet along.

Refreshments will be served. A craft project will be held after the story time. Story time is for children ages 2 and older, accompanied by an adult.
